Cause of the Porter Ranch Gas Leak
The Porter Ranch Gas Leak started on October 23, 2015, when natural gas began spewing from a gas storage well at Southern California Gas Company’s (“SoCalGas”) Aliso Canyon Storage Facility. According to preliminary estimates from the California Air Resources Board (“CARB”), the well has been blowing thousands of kilograms of methane, the main component of natural gas, into the atmosphere. CARB estimated that on November 28th alone, the facility leaked nearly 60,000 kilograms of methane an hour into the atmosphere. In the meantime, residents have reported numerous health issues including, headaches, nosebleeds, dizziness and nausea and thousands have been forced to relocate to temporary housing, in part because of the noxious odor from the leaking gas. While methane itself is odorless, foul-smelling chemicals are injected into natural gas that produce a putrid (rotten egg) odor that has continued to afflict nearby residents. Currently, however, SoCalGas estimates the leak will not be contained until February or March 2016.
